10 May Why you do what you do….
Why do you do what you do?
Of course you can ask yourself this about many things…. But I am referring specifically to exercise. For the most part we know why we try to eat healthy foods and get at least 8 hours of sleep, to drink 8 glasses of water a day and there is a fundamental understanding that we should also exercise. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself during a Bootcamp type class for instance, “why am I holding this plank?” Yes, I am someone that thinks things to death sometimes, and perhaps it is enough to just be IN the plank and OUT of your head, I get that. BUT, it is interesting to know what your intention is, what your goals are when choosing the type of exercise regimen you ultimately end up participating in.
When I used to teach large group classes I would occasionally come across the following scenario… I would see everyone going through the movements, following my direction well, but with what looked like no true connection to what their own intention really was. When this would happen, I would stop the class and out of genuine curiosity ask them a simple question “why are you here, when at this moment you could have chosen to be anywhere?” They would look puzzled for a moment and respond; “because this is what time class is…” And then I would ask, why did you choose Pilates and not something else, what is Pilates to you and what do you want to get out of it? Knowing this for yourself, especially in group classes is essential.
Before your next Pilates class, yoga class, spinning class… whatever it may be, set an intention and choose to truly and deeply connect with that intention for the entire class. You may not make it through the whole class without letting your mind wonder from your intention, and that’s ok. With practice, you will become more and more able to remain present in your body and with your intention. Pilates has as a theme “connecting to and moving from your center,” maybe try this as an intention, see how it goes. Nothing bad can come from being truly and honestly present with your most authentic self, connected to and moving from your deepest center.
And…as always, BREATHE!
Life is beautifully filled with options…
Know your SELF, connect with your INTENTION and let this wisdom guide you.
“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray”
